Bleak Horizons: By J. Porteous
Review By: Elaine Emmerick
The Twilight Zone meets Black Mirror in this five story anthology. Bleak Horizons offers an insight into humanity's near and far future, with stories ranging from a post-apocalyptic Europe brutally managing a population problem, to Moon-based scientists with bad news for Earth, who have all but forgotten them.
Dark fiction for a dark world. This brutal but thought-provoking read portrays futures which will keep your mind awake long into the bleak night.
Characters: 5/5 Stars
The characters in this collection of short stories are all very different but yet are the same. Their life experiences are tragic but are somehow filled with hope.
Plot: 5/5 Stars
The plots in this book are out of this world and futuristic. From a catastrophe where humans become scavengers, to scientists who create organisms to be left on a far away planet to flourish and grow, to a man who loses time and becomes part of a simulation that inhabits beings, to a time where people have implants to monitor population limits and ensures deaths are tracked, to a last astronaut who tries to save Earth. I found myself hooked into each short story!
Writing Structure: 5/5 Stars
This book was easy to read, no grammar errors. I appreciated J. Porteous' in-depth writing in every short story.
Ending: 5/5 Stars
The endings of this collection were dramatic and gave me the opportunity to reflect on them. These short stories are of hope, life, the unknown, sacrifice and love and finally, despair. These stories will stay with me for some time.
Overall: 5/5 Stars
This book is a definite must-read! I highly recommend it! BRAVO, J. Porteous!!

Small-town private investigator and part-time assassin Bonnie Parker isn't expecting any trouble at the boardwalk amusement arcade in South Jersey — until she meets Kyle Ridley, a renegade drug courier on the run, who desperately requires Bonnie's special skills to keep herself alive.
Going up against a ruthless drug syndicate isn't anyone's idea of fun and games, especially when the enemy is the Dragusha clan, whose graying patriarch – Ujku, the Wolf – has a penchant for shipping his victims out of Port Newark in a freighter’s cargo hold, locked in a steel container where no one can hear their screams.
What started as another day at the beach turns into Bonnie's longest and most harrowing night as she tangles with professional killers, sadistic thugs, and a deeply crazy man out of her past. It’s the ultimate test of luck and skill, with the odds against her stacked impossibly high, and Bonnie wouldn't play at all if she didn't have her own skin in the game.

Poetry In Motion: By Glenda Higgins
Review By: Angel Ramon
Usually, here in the Hybrid Nation, we review mostly novels. However, I wanted to give poetry a chance, as it's sadly a dying genre and it really deserves a better fate. Poetry can be very fun to read and I will be reviewing a poetry book now.
The review will be more of a general review since there isn't really a plot or an ending to the book. It will be given one general rating and be given a summary of what it's about.
General Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
I'm not a huge poem fan, but I do like to read them on occasion and enjoy them. My girlfriend is the bigger poem fan out of us and I'm sure she will enjoy this book as I did, maybe more. Some of the poems have to do with the beauty of Canada, which is somewhere I need to visit before I die. Others show love and compassion, the author even gives an explanation of how she got started on poetry and her writing career. Overall a great book, some of the poems did not grab my attention, but that's because I'm not a complete poem freak. However, if you're a fan of poetry this will certainly be for you! Also, some of these poems make good use of metaphors, which is the harder of the figurative languages to use in poetry. This author has talent in a dying genre, however, I say give this book and poetry a chance, you might be surprised. After all, you girlfriend/Boyfriend might be into poetry as well!
P.S. - To the Author: Don't stop writing poetry, you will find people who are into this really cool art!
The Golden Rule: By Jessica Maria Baumgartner
Review By: Angel Ramon Medina
Before I get on with the review I would like Jessica for giving me a free review copy in exchange for an honest review that I won on a giveaway during launch day.
General Rating: 5/5 Stars
Reading this book gave me hope for humanity, the messages in the book are beautiful. Basically, no matter what religion you are, you should be accepted for who you are. This is simply a feel good book that I read last night and it gave me good vibes going to bed. I highly recommend this to the kiddos out there, plus the pictures are drawn well and I can tell it was done out of the heart as well which is a bonus. Please read this book to your kids as a bedtime story. Even adults will find this book a great and positive read in a world that is unfortunately filled with nothing but negatively.
After reading this book I feel that there is still hope for world peace! Well done Jessica!

The Street: By Michael Prescott
Review By: Elaine Emmerick
“This is the story of three summer days on the street where I grew up. Three days that I lived twice ...”
Imagine that you turn a corner and find yourself instantly, inexplicably transposed in space and time to the world of your childhood, more than four decades ago. George McGovern is running for president. Miniskirts and bell-bottom jeans are in fashion. A can of tuna fish costs forty-nine cents.
And there’s no way out.
You must be there for a reason. And you begin to suspect what it is. If you’re right, it will require you to take a man's life in an act of cold-blooded, premeditated murder. But that’s okay.
You’ve murdered before …
1. Character ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The main character in this story is not named. He's 54 years old, lives in New Jersey and has been in trouble with the law for most of his life.
2. Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
As the story begins, he is running away from the police on a cold October evening in 2016 after hitting a woman in a bar. As he turns the corner to get away from the police, his life changes as he finds himself on Miller Ave., 44 years ago on his childhood street. He can't believe the cars he sees from that time, no satellite dishes, no recycling. He finds the local newspaper and it's dated... July 12, 1972! He realizes that there's some sort of force field around Miller Ave. and he can't go back to 2016.
3. Writing Structure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There were no grammar errors. The storyline flowed from beginning to end. Michael's attention to detail is very descriptive; you can visualize the scenes in your minds eye!
4. Ending ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The ending is absolutely thrilling! He sees his younger self and wonders what happened to him to make his adult self the way he is. He is full of rage and doesn't know where it's coming from. He meets people he remembers as a child; even his babysitter Liz. Someone is robbing houses in the neighborhood and he decides to kill the man; thinking once he does that, the force field will let him back to 2016. Without giving too much away, the police are after him in 1972 and as he runs, he finds himself back in 2016. Still raging, still screaming...
5. Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a story of a man trying to change the course of his life as he goes back to 1972. Was he trying to redeem himself? To protect his "younger" self? Michael Prescott has written a book that is totally unique from his other books...but in an excellent way!

When a frustrated ex-con takes a young family and their home hostage, the only officer he’ll speak with is Detective Wade Jackson. But Jackson already has his hands full running the Eugene Violent Crimes Unit and overseeing the investigation of a series of seemingly random assaults.
While Jackson juggles the hostage negotiations with his chaotic single-parent home life, the assaults point toward a troubled company that recycles industrial oil. With several lawsuits pending, the CEO of Westpac emerges as a likely suspect in the latest attack of a trial lawyer.
As Jackson tries to meet the hostage taker's demands, a powerful politician interferes for personal reasons, and the standoff turns bloody. Meanwhile, the latest assault victim dies, and Jackson’s team must scramble to identify the assailant. Can they piece together the connections in time to prevent another murder and save the family?
Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Detective Wade Jackson leads the Violent Crimes Unit.
Detective Lara Evans is a team member of the Violent Crimes Unit and the elite SWAT team.
Marcus Rossi is an attorney for Doug Thayer, who is suing WestPac.
Ted Daggett is the CEO of WestPac.
Thomas Foster has taken hostages in a home he once owned. He wants the county to return his home to him.
Ezra Spielman currently owns the house. His wife and children are being held hostage. He is an attorney for WestPac.
Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Marcus Rossi is taking his normal morning run on a bike path when he is hit from behind and knocked out. He is the third person to be assaulted in the Eugene, Oregon area.
Detective Jackson is in court; he's being sued by his ex-wife's fiancee for wrongful death. The hearing has been delayed and he gets the call about Marcus' assault. He asks Detective Lara Evans to take over the investigation. At the same time, there's a hostage situation and the hostage taker, Thomas Foster will only talk to Jackson. Evans has been called as part of the elite SWAT team to the scene. She gives her case to Detective Rob Schakowski. Jackson finds out that Foster wants his home returned to him. He was convicted of criminal activity with his son and the county confiscated his property. Foster's conviction was overturned and now he wants his home back. The family in the house are the current owners, the Spielman's.
Another person has been assaulted with a machete. Sochi Thayer is the mother of Doug, who is suing WestPac. The detectives are trying to determine if there is some connection with these assaults. Detective Schakowski is heading to Bend to arrest Ted Daggett but on his way, he hears of an assault outside of Bend. He meets with Rosalyn Ormond; she's been beaten. Schak has found a connection between her, Marcus and Sochi.
Writing Structure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The writing style is excellent. The way L.J. weaves the story together leaves you anxious as to what will happen next! The storyline is very timely at the moment. I love the way she addresses the serious issue of bullying and what can happen to those who were bullied at a young age. It is a story worth reading and with Jackson, Lara and Schak on the case, they finally figure it out.
Ending ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I must tell you...the ending was a non-stop, heart-pounding turn of events. You find out who was assaulting these people and why. You also find out why Thomas wanted to see his son one last time. I really don't want to give too much away... except to say it's a story you will not soon forget.

A World Without Color: By Bernard Jan
Review By: Angel Ramon Medina
What do you say to someone who is dying? And what do you say when that someone can't understand a word you are saying? How do you comfort each other throughout... and beyond?
My love, if you go away in a few days, the world will lose its colors and darken like the land of Mordor. If you go away and leave me to wander aimlessly, alone in this sea become wild, like a ship with a broken rudder and drowned sailors, and if I don't find comfort in the warmth of your body, clutched in my embrace at the end of the day, I'm afraid I won't survive.
"I don't regret anything. Marcel was not only my cat, he was my everything. My brother, my friend, my world shrank in a soft gray-striped furry ball."—Bernard Jan
Characters: 5/5 Stars
The book focuses on Marcel a cat that I assume belonged to Bernard. It's written in like a strange but well written Second Person point of view. For me, that is pretty hard to write and pull off. I can sense that Bernard really loved his cat and he put many great details that enhance the characterization. You can learn a few cool tricks if you are an author trying to build a lovable character.
Plot: 5/5 Stars
The plot is an emotional one and one that made me cry! Yes, this book made me cry, don't judge me please lol. It's about the last three days of a cat named Marcel and gives the point of view of the cat living through memories. It also describes the actual feelings the three days before Marcel dies. To add to the shock factor, Bernard also included a picture of Marcel which made me emotional. If you're looking for a sad story then this is for you. This is a great break after reading and writing action novels.
Writing Structure: 4.5/5 Stars
A few portions of the book were a bit tricky to follow and I had to reread it. However, since Bernard's native language is not English I won't count it against him too much.
Ending: 5/5 Stars
The Ending is where I cried the most since its where Marcel dies and I can tell it was a very painful loss for Bernard. I felt that I was Bernard at the end of the book, I love books that pull me in and make me feel that I'm part of the book. You'll have to read it for yourself to experience this.
Overall 4.8/5 Stars
Minus a few parts that I had to reread this is a great book to read and you can sure see why Bernard is an animal lover. Warning it will make you cry and if you love cats this might be a painful but powerful read. Highly Recommend!

Doctor A is on a dig and as she's working, she finds something buried a few feet down. She found a skull with a bone sticking out of the eye socket. DI's Kim Stone and Tom Travis go to the scene and will both handle the case. They will speak with the Preece and Cowley families, who own/lease the property. They hope the families know something about the skull found. Then... Doctor A finds more bones... Bryant and Dawson are working a case involving Henryk Kowalski. He was brutally beaten because of his race. They are also called to the scene of a suicide by train. The victim is Bubba Jones.
