Hey there, it's Angel Ramon here with another book review. Despite being involved with my newest project, I had time to read and review another book. Telling by the cover and the amount of great reviews I was going to be in for a treat. Also I'm biased towards horror since I love it so much! This will be my second GameLit review of the year and my first survivor horror review as well. So let's get on with it shall we?
Story: 93/100
Blrub from Amazon: Two brothers learn of the apocalypse after being out of touch for a few days. Returning to town, they learn first-hand, the dead are coming back to life with a taste for flesh. With their parents in Nebraska, they must embark on a journey to rescue them as they set into motion their zombie apocalypse plan.
But they'll see not all is fun and games as they realize it is nothing like they imagined it would be. Can they make it in time to save their parents from a fate worse than death? Emmett Wolfe has been preparing for this day for years, but still, cannot believe it is happening. An infection unlike any other has begun to spread across America and the world as he knows it is coming to an end. He must rescue his daughter and ex-wife and transport them to a safe location.
But at the end of the world, nowhere is safe anymore…
The blurb was enough to catch my attention and make me want to read the book. Although it's a novella, it's well written with a catchy storyline about a couple of brothers who have to rescue their parents while their town in Nebraska is being invaded by... ZOMBIES! I like the way the brothers think this would be a fun experience and sure why not, I dream of being in the middle of a zombie outbreak acting like a bad ass.
However, later on the story takes a serious tone as they find out their parents are in deeper trouble than they thought. Jousha Chadd certainty outdid himself. There is plently of action and he kind of has the same writing style as I do as he focuses more on action. I'm not an easy reader to keep engaged as I need action to keep me going, so Josh well done! I won't spoil too much of the story as that is not my style and you should read for yourself as it might not be for everyone.
If I had a knock it would be the setting. However, that's because I'm from New York City and grew up in an urban enviroment. Other than that, excellent read.
RPG/Game Elements: 85/100
What made me fall in love with this book was the indirect references to Fallout the video game. I know Josh wasn't really aiming for this, but maybe he should because it reads like a Fallout game. Despite that though, this book doesn't have gaming elements described in the book. As a result, I can't say that this is a true GameLit book or LitRPG for that matter. So if you're looking for something with stats this might not be for you.
However, I won't bash Joshua because this book was never marketed as a GameLit/LitRPG book. In otherwords, it's clear that this is a purely survivor horror book and not GameLit. I will call it GameLit Survivor Horror though because the gaming elements are implied in the book and if you're a fan of Fallout you will see the how the book and game are the same.
Dialouge: 95/100
The dialouge is corase and isn't the most friendliest, but this is survival horror. So the rules are a bit different and the reader should expect the language to be a bit strong due to the survival trope. I like strong dialouge, so this fit right in to my liking.
There are emotional moments that kept me in and made me feel like I was playing Fallout. I felt like I was there at moments, but it lost the emotion enough that I was reminded what I was reading. This book has some strong language, but it's rather clean compared to my books. It has to be as it has a grade level of Grades 5-12. The dialouge enhances the story well and I look forward to book 2.
Overall Power Score: 91/100
Taking the average of the three ratings, this book earns a 91/100 or an A-. There were a couple of minor thins such as setting and lack of real gaming elements that took away a little. However, it's an awesome read. Also it's a novella, so it's not too long to read and great for anyone starting out in the GameLit Survivor Horror genre. For 99 cents, this is a must grab!
