Why did I write Prehistoric Crisis?

As exciting as my book is and despite the many request I've gotten for a release date or to read it, I wanted this post to be about why. I'm sure you fanatics want to know why did I write this book. Well, you might figure the reason I wrote this book was because I'm into dinosaurs and loved Jurassic Park, you would be correct. However, there are deeper reasons why I started this book series and I wanted to give something back to the LitRPG/Gamelit community.

As fun as it was wrtiting my Gamelit Survival Horror series, I needed a change of scenery. Not to mention that a dinosaur based book sounded much more exciting to my friends, fans, and new readers alike. Not to mention there isn't much in the way of LitRPG books that involve dinosaurs. Only one I can think of from the top of my head is the Tamer series which is rather popular. Other than that though there is no true dinosaur fantasy/horror read that places the prehistoric creatures at the center. (I read Tamer and it's really good).

With that is mind, at first I was going to go in a direction similar to Dino Crisis. Funny thing is, the more I thought about it the less intriguing it sounded. As much as I loved Dino Crisis, it just wasn't popular enough. The fact that Dino Crisis 3 was a complete dud didn't do the series any favors and is considered to be the series killer after the first two were pretty awesome. Then I said to myself, as good as Dino Crisis was to play, I think shooting dinosaurs isn't nearly as fun as using swordplay. Not to mention gunplay in dinosaur stories are overplayed and not my cup of tea either.

So there went the Dino Crisis angle. I can't say I didn't get any help because I did. Fans of my work went out of their way to message me and feed me ideas. Most of them said that this should be a dungeon core based story and one with many fantasy elements. I happily agreed with them and decided to build the game off a fantasy trope. Now I didn't want to be like everyone else and as much as I enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons, I wanted to try something different.

Enter one of the greatest Nintendo games released, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I've played the other Zelda games, but by far this is my favorite. Funny thing is, this was the one that always evaded my completionist duties (I loved playing and completing games as a hobby). This was 'the' game that managed to get away with me being unable to complete it. Even though I struggled to beat it, I was in love with the story and it's unique trope. It uses a storyline where the MC has to clear five different elemental temples along with mini-dungeons to collect the elemental medallions to meet Ganon, who is the main villain.

I will not tell you the whole story as I would be robbing you of the experience of playing it if you haven't. So this became my main inspiration for Prehistoric Crisis. Although the world I created is much different than the game and it's located in a virtual game world.

Now here's the thing, I love Ocarina of time but it's not without its flaws. First of all, the MC which is Link is mostly one-dimensioned when it comes to his personality. Second, I felt Nintendo could have built a bigger relationship between the characters and/or build a love relationship between Link and Zelda like fans love to post memes about. Finally, am I crazy to think that the temples could have given Link special magical abilites for each one he beat?

Taking all that into account, I wanted to build a story that incororated magic, dinosaurs, but also a epic love story along with a coming of age that would make the reader feel rewarded as he/she read the story. To put it simply, the reader would grow along with the MC as he would go from a young adult who is excited like a little kid about riding dinosaurs to a man who views the fantasy world of DinoRule as a way of life. Plus I wanted to answer a question that often comes up in gaming groups and the LitRPG groups as well. The question being, if you were stuck in a video game would you like to live in the world for the rest of your life knowing you would never return to the real world? DinoRule will be an epic world that will prove very tempting for the MC to stay in and despite being a video game world, it has a real world feel.

As for the personal reason why I decided to write Prehistoric Crisis was because Dinosaurs is passion of mine. Everyday I daydream about riding a pterodactyl in the sky and looking down. I truly beleive that dinosaurs will make a come back as weird as you might think I am for saying that. I really think the prehistoric reptiles are cool as heck and I think humans and dinosaurs actually got along.

I felt it was important to tell my fans where I got this epic idea for a story. To be honest, I actually enjoy telling my personal story to my fans and to my fans, I hope you enjoy my personal story. More importantly, I hope you enjoy my actual dinosaur story. As much I want to make money off my work, I also want to build friendships and show my readers that I really care about my craft. This is only the beginning of what will be my biggest series I've planned and I'm excited to continue.
